The sound engine used in this synth is the same as the Korg R3 Radius engine. I felt that Korg could’ve delivered with more presets as most synths coming out today have far more picks, however, I still think that you have more than enough great-sounding presets to get your money worth in a hardware synth. Packed with 128 sounds, a tempo knob, a pitch bender, a mod-wheel, a vocoder, an arpeggiator, and an effect table, the Microkorg XL packs a powerful punch for its price range. My honest opinion is that the XL and the plus version are extremely similar overall. Microkorg (Released in 2002 & still in production).The Micrkorg XL is second in its lineage. For starters, the sounds are similar to those that you would find its predecessor, the Microkorg, however, it has an updated sound engine.

The same sound engine is found in the plus version as well as similar sounds.Ī fun fact is that I actually toured with this synthesizer for a couple of years and it worked really well for what I needed it to do. The XL has been replaced by the XL +, which is basically the same synthesizer with a facelift. If you’re wondering what the main differences between the original Microkorg and the Microkorg XL are, the XL has an updated sound engine and it is also lighter. With this being said, most of the sounds on the Microkorg XL are super-nostalgic and almost instantly bring you back to the 80s.

It’s tremendously light-weight, portable & also extremely powerful when you compare it to its competition in its price range. My opinion of this keyboard is that I still believe it is worth it in 2020. None of the keys on the bed ever broke and I also haven’t had any problems with the knobs or mod-wheels. Now, after 10 years of use, I believe that this keyboard actually held up incredibly well.

This was a rather simple synthesizer to navigate and understand, especially when comparing it to other options. Combining short and long notes, and some delay, you can play wonderfully dreamy songs on this.The Korg Microkorg XL was the first synthesizer that I ever purchased and I have to say, it was a great purchase. Holding a note adds a soft pad to the background, enabling you to accompany yourself. Playing short notes will create soft rhythmic tones that change timbre with different playing velocity. If it sounds weird then I probably typed something wrongĪ dreamy layered patch.

Mostly this is good for some gnarly lead solo stuff and not so good for pads or anything on the low endĪll the select 2 stuff is identical to the init because I just wanted simple vibrato on the mod wheel.
